Wasp profile:

There are various kinds of wasp species. Here, we have enlisted a few common species of wasps and their profiles.

  1. European wasp: These wasps are black with yellow stripes on their back. They usually grow up to 1.2-1.7 cm in size. The lifespan of worker European wasps is usually short, they live for about a few weeks while only the queen lives for a year. They build their nests in the ground. And if they enter your house, you may find them living in the walls and spaces between the cracks.
  1. Paper wasp: Paper wasps are long and have a slim body. These wasps are also black but they have dull yellow stripes on their back, unlike European wasps. They usually grow up to 1-1.5 cm in size. There are generally two queens in the colony of paper wasps. Also, they do not build nests often and live in the already built nests. These wasps are called paper wasps because of their unique way of building nests. They collect stems and wood and mix it with their saliva to form a paper-like structure, which they use to build nests. You can find their nests outside your house, inside the roof spaces, and under eaves.
  1. Mud wasps: These are yellow with black bands all over the body, that is opposite to the European wasps. They grow up to 1.7-3 cm in size. Their speciality is that they build their nest with mud, especially clay mud which they have collected from all over. Hence, they are called mud wasps.

Bee profile:

Bees are the insects that are commonly found around gardens and places where there are flowers. They come in different sizes and species. Bees have great importance for humankind as they produce honey for our consumption. But provoking them may result in getting a bee sting. Bees usually leave their sting onto the victim after stinging. This causes immense pain and inflammation. Hence, you must be careful while dealing with bees.

Here are some common species of bees that you can come across in Australia:

  1. European honey bee- European honey bee is the most commonly found bee in Australia. It is usually dark brown with yellow bands all over its body. Generally, honey bees are oval and grow up to 1.5 cm in size. They live in colonies and each colony has one queen bee. The queen bee is capable of laying 2000 eggs every day and its lifespan is about 2-4 years. Collecting nectar and producing honey is the job of worker bees that usually live for 1-10 months. Honey bees do not build nests but they build their hives. Their hives can be found everywhere hanging from the surfaces such as roof, trees, building, etc. Bees use wax for the construction of these hives.
  1. Mortar bees- These bees are found in different colours based on their species. Mostly, mortar bees have yellow or orange coloured stripes on their abdomen. Similarly, red, black, and blue coloured mortar bees are also found. They are oval and have slightly transparent wings. Their size differs from species to species. Mortar bees prefer to live alone rather than in colonies. They can build their nests in twigs, mud, and even soft stones. Such bees do not usually sting but if your house is infested with these bees, there will be a lot of damage.
